Tips for starting a drum circle

So you’re thinking of starting your own event? Here are some ideas that can help with starting a drumming and dancing event in a public space.

  • The first thing is choosing the space. If you are thinking about an outdoor space, we recommend finding a place that is not close to residential areas/homes/apartments.
  • It helps to have a shelter for outdoor spaces and a place for musicians to sit (chairs or benches/picnic tables). Lighting is important.
  • If you have a park or outdoor space in mind, talk with the manager to see if they can provide a shelter and chairs, and also if they can help you advertise your event.
  • Find out if there are local noise ordinances that may impact your event. Many areas focus on amplified music, so hand drumming may be okay.
  • We recommend consistency in when you host the events. The Raleigh Drum circle used to be held on a monthly basis. It was difficult for people to remember which week our event it was on. When we switched to weekly on Weds, that made it easier.
  • Get people to help! We ask our “regular” attendees to set up/put away chairs, bring hula hoops or extra instruments to share, and to invite their friends.
  • Set up advertising to get folks engaged and keep them informed. Social media is free and you can also set up a website for low cost. Business cards are a handy way to invite passersby to join in the fun.

Contact your local arts community and get involved with them. Many arts councils host art walks and musicians and street performers add spice to the events!

These are just a few tips. We are happy to talk with you more. contact us and let us know what you have in mind and we’ll see how we can support your drum, er, I mean dream!
